Life in the mountains is not possible, to sum up in an essay. It has many colors which reflect upon people. From the purple mass of mountains, which stretch as far as your eyes can take you to the ice-cold waters running down from natural glaciers, every scenery is soothing to your eyes. A balm on the wounds of frustration to renew your soul. Gilgit Baltistan is all covered in the three mountain ranges: the Karakoram, the Himalayas, and the Hindu Kush. They stand tall like giants, caped with a clear blue sky above them. Such geography of the region is what determines the lifestyle people adapt to survive.
A reason the highlands are famous is their exotic mountain beauty. It offers constant contact with nature. And there is always something magical and unbeatable about being in nature. Spending time alone in the mountains dumbs the trash of your mind and provides renewal to your soul. People say Mother Nature has healing abilities, not because it heals bodily wounds but it becomes your escape during the dark periods. When you are exhausted and burn out, when your life feels messed up, or when everything seems to have caved in spending some time by a river can bring your life back to normal. There exists serenity and peacefulness in watching the sunsets or the cold water running down, which calm things down. And that is all you would need to heal the wounds of exhaustion within your inner self.
Though the mountains provide guard and beauty to the region, they leave it ice cold in winters and reduce the duration of summers. Snow makes the region inhospitable during winters and streams of cold water come running down through the same mountains during summer. The ice-cold water is a natural coolant and if you put your feet in, you can feel the chill travel through your bones.
Waking up to the clouds floating outside your window has its own charm. It rains most of the time. And when it rains it washes everything from grass to trees. In regions like Hunza, the clouds come down after the rain and you can literally feel the white sponges all around you. Moreover, during the night, the blue sky is witnessed dense with stars. The sky is flooded with stars and you can spend all your night gazing at the sky, lying on damp grass, feeling the moisture and cold reaching under your skin. There are many travel destinations among which Astore is considered best for looking at the night sky.
Apart from spending the sunsets with mugs of hot, steaming tea you will find magic in watching the sunset behind the mountain peaks like Rakaposhi. Sun rays hit the giant peaks and make the snow shine like diamonds leaving the orange flares behind. People do not only keep watching the mountain peaks but also they like to go hiking and camping in these mountains. Camping and hiking have become everyday activities. You will find every kid hike and you would be surprised at how good everyone is hiking besides the danger. Rakaposhi base camp is a common and accessible destination to go camping. People spend their time engaging with these gifts of nature.
In addition, other activities include games. Youth is getting extraordinary in this field. It includes a majority of girls as well. People encourage their daughters and sisters to excel in these fields. Badminton, volleyball, table tennis, cricket, and athletics are some of them. Youth play these games nationally and internationally. Polo is another major activity, especially in Shandur and Chitral. Polo festival is held yearly where teams from Gilgit Baltistan participate and give each other tough challenges.
If one could keep on writing about the mountain beauty the article might never end. Gilgit Baltistan is a region inundated with natural beauty. The pure environment gives a unique identity to highlands, which stands out among the other provinces of Pakistan. One visiting this place can come into contact with nature and the lifestyle of people. There are a lot of visiting points but each point has mountains and fresh water in common. One visiting the Northern Areas feels the magic and leaves with zillions of memories.
