Writing a Personal Statement: a story that belongs to you

July 26 2021  ·  3 min read

How would it sound to hire a ghost writer to write your autobiography? Making other people write your autobiography adds irony to its definition. Meanwhile, people pay other people, all the time, to write stories about them because they never learn how to write themselves. Essence of a personal statement lies in the fact that it is personal. And you get to write an original story, which belongs only to you. This could be your chance to get rid of begging your friends to write personal statements for you and actually learn to write a personal statement yourself.

The time you used to start a personal statement with a quote from some great philosopher has expired. It is bizarre and does not sound engaging at all. Usually colleges, universities, and scholarships provide questions you are supposed to answer. When you do that you can do it by being original. Personal statements require you to be relevant and real. While writing down your unique story, you should thoroughly explain yourself. Moreover, it should reflect your experiences.

A personal story is supposed to be specific and briefly detailed. Simply start off with some event that happened to you, which could grab the admission officer’s attention. The admission’s department have got a pile of essay from students of your level. Therefore, make your story stands out among all others. Through your personal statement show them that your goal in life is connected to their mission. Add some spice in a way that could convey the message that you are the one the college is looking for.

Personal statements should not be general as well as you need to add important details later. Because the admission department does not know you and they do not know what is going on in your mind. Thus, your essay must be giving clear ideas. You can make it interesting at the same time by showing them that you have got real interest in the course you are applying for. It can be done through mentioning books you have read, conferences and seminars you have attended related to the program you have applied for.

If you want to mention the extra-curricular activities of your involvement do not arrange them in a list. Again you can use personal stories to show what was the theme, what was involved, and what did you learn. Be creative and make connections of activities to yourself. Vividly state how these activities shaped you and made you who you are. It will show your interest and dedication towards the events you get yourself involved in. that whatever you do is not only for your entertainment but also you take away effects, which polish you.

The vocabulary choice you make while writing your personal statement decides its overall impression. The verbs and adjectives set a tone throughout your story, which makes it either engaging or just another essay to be dumped into dustbin. You should appeal to the five senses. Reader should be able to picture your story from the descriptive words you have used. However, avoid vague, boring, and overused descriptions.

When you are choosing a story for your college application, sure enough it has played some role in your life. A failure, an accident, a success, it could be anything. And this particular story has got special place in your heart. Therefore, you should use emotional appeal to convey what place it holds in your life. The analogies must reflect the importance of your story to you.

At the end of the day, when you are done writing come back to your draft after few hours. Try to do editing. Check spelling and grammar errors. Tone of your essay should be with respect to the audience. Next, there should be connection between your sentences. And when it comes to vocabulary, it should be visualizing but eliminate flowery language. After you are done editing yourself find fresh pair of eyes to analyze and critique your personal statement. And then your personal statement is ready to be submitted for your college application.

Hii there! I love to sketch and paint, and I am clueless about how I ended up with pen and paper on my Gap Year. It was just dumb luck that I figured out I can arrange words into sentences. I am warning you I can be boring because I don't use references from big-name seasons on the go. As well as sarcasm is not my thing. However, I can wake up when it's 2 in the morning, make coffee, and write dairy. Welcome to my territory, it's me :')
